SUV’s for me . . . but not for thee.

suvOur government seeks to change our behavior constantly. Rather than protecting our liberties they instead choose laws and rewards that mold our choices to their preferred world view. Inevitably the results can be contradictory.
The President and Congressional Democrats have decided that the auto industry isn’t failing because of burdensome labor contracts, immense legacy costs, and a horrifying tax environment in their home state, no no no, it’s because they are intent, focused like a laser, on manufacturing cars Americans don’t want to buy. And you know they mean SUVs- time out- do mini vans really get so much better gas mileage that they should escape all the earth scorching scorn?
Time in.
The President weighed in yesterday: ‘Obama at a White House online town hall said the price for more help from taxpayers will be for GM and Chrysler to “finally restructure” to deal with longstanding problems. “Just trying to build more and more SUVs and counting on gas prices being low and that’s your only profit margin, that’s just not a model that’s going to work,” he said.’

It’s true that SUVs didn’t crack the top ten best selling cars in 2008, but instead of eliminating SUVs from their lineup why not switch them over to diesel? How many Americans would buy an SUV capable of all their family hauling needs if they were able to get 35 miles per gallon? Or 30?

So ok President Obama, we switch to smaller cars but how does a growing family meet the NHTSA recommendations for safely transporting our children? Laws vary by state but they generally follow the guidelines of the NHTSA: requiring a car seat or booster seat until a child is either 8 years old or 4′9″.

According to our government you will have the following choices:
1. Buy the smaller car, have only two children (3 boosters will not fit across a Honda Civic’s backseat), give up college football tailgating forever.
2. Buy the smaller car, wait 8 years until you have your 3rd child, still no tailgating.
3. Buy the smaller car, flout the guidelines as you recklessly endanger your 7 year old, crammed between boosters. Still, find something else to do on Saturdays, ooh maybe you can schedule your mandatory volunteer service instead! With uniforms! It’s like the Dharma Initiative, only awesomer.
4. Keep your SUV, live as a PC renegade, safely secure all of your children, have room for their gear and enough room in back to save you a second trip to the grocery store later.

Seriously I’m not kidding about the tailgating. The President knows nothing of how I live.
Yay, liberty!

Pop quiz- how many Ford Escorts will it take to transport these six people and all this gear?

Answer: 1 Oldsmobile Silhouette
