In Case You Missed It . . .

Supreme Court Overturns Sotomayor Decision

Hooray!  The Supreme Court overturned the ruling in the Ricci v. DeStephano case!  Perhaps justice isn’t dead.  The decision translates to an admission that the New Haven, CT firefighters were indeed denied promotions based on their race.  For those of you who don’t know the details, basically what happened in this case was the New Haven Fire Department administered an advancement test, they gave special consideration to minorities, but the top performers (those who would be eligible for promotions) were mostly white with a few Hispanics (and no African-Americans).  So, they threw out the test and nobody got promotions.  One of the firefighters, Ricci, is dyslexic and worked extensively to offset the effects of his disability, including investing a sizable sum of money into preparation material.  His and other firefighter’s claim was that their constitutional right to equal protection under the law was violated.  Supreme Court nominee, Sotomayor was a member of a 3-person panel that ruled to uphold the dismissal of the case.  The decision has drawn tremendous scrutiny with regard to Sotomayor’s ability as a Supreme Court Justice.

Iraq Taking the Lead

I always thought it was terribly ironic that liberals spent so much of their time screaming about forcing Iraqis to “take responsibility for themselves.”  They apparently don’t find that argument remotely convincing when it comes to domestic policies, as they remain the champions of the welfare state.  Furthermore, they’re usually highly sympathetic to global humanitarianism, but I guess not when America has a real responsibility to help those in need, such as in post-war Iraq.  Now, about two years after the enormously successful troop surge, which was originally bemoaned by Democrats as a lost cause (and people think they can’t run anything!), General Odierno believes Iraqi forces are ready.  In a recent interview, Dick Cheney expressed some concern over the feasibility of Iraq troop withdrawal which is set to be completed by the end of 2011.  Only time will tell how effectual the transition will be.

Cap and Trade Passes House

And of course, “Cap and Trade,” aka, “Tax and Regulate” was passed by a slim margin in the House.  This particular article offers some interesting insight into the Democratic strategy employed in light of the bill’s relative public unpopularity.  Those slippery devils!  But it’s still not too late to save the country from going down a California-style road of ruin, as it must yet pass in the Senate.   Victory in the Senate is far from certain, so please contact your Senators and ask them to spare America from this great liberal burden!
