The answer to murder is not more murder

Dr. George Tiller

Dr. George Tiller

George Tiller has been killing unborn babies since 1973. In 2004, he himself claimed to have performed over 60,000 abortions. This is not the kind of guy I’d sit down to lunch with, obviously.

However, murdering someone who made a living of murdering babies is not the answer. When a person claims to be pro-life, he or she is supposed to be just that—for life, all life. The lives of those we disagree with aren’t ours to take in the name of the pro-life movement.

I understand the frustration and anger surrounding George Tiller very well as I was raised in Kansas. As Christians and pro-lifers, we’ve struggled against his practice for decades. It’s one thing to fight legal battles, hold rallies and pray. It’s entirely the wrong thing to take the law (and God’s justice) into one’s own hands and commit murder.

The coming days will find the pro-life movement drenched in controversy (as usual) and cries of hypocrisy and accusations of violence. Kansans for Life, Operation Rescue and Priests for Life have all condemned this murder but it is doubtful the left will listen to them or give recognition to their innocence in this atrocity. Let’s not give them fuel for the fire.

I’m calling on all pro-lifers to condemn this heinous act and refrain from anything resembling celebration over the death of a fellow human being.

  1. I have to agree with you, Lisa. I abhor the ultimate act of violence that is abortion. But in the same breath, I cannot and do not condone killing an abortionist. Those in the left seek out these acts of violence as their purported “proof” that we’re all just a bunch of right wing zealots and that we’re essentially insane. It is extremely unfortunate that this happened. I do pray that his family is able to have some peace. I want people to realize that when they are aborting a child, they are committing murder. If we just killed all abortionists to prevent them from aborting, more would step up and replace them. No one learns anything and it is a lose-lose situation. I am also saddened that this individual apparently felt he had no other recourse but to take the law into his own hands. I think that everyone has lost with this murder. Nothing was gained, and abortions will not be stopped because of this death. The abortions performed by Dr. Tiller may cease to exist, but there is always someone who shares his ideology waiting to fill his shoes. I fear that murders like this only serve to strengthen the “pro-choice” community’s resolve to push for enhanced protections for abortions and abortion providers, physically and under the law. I am sure that the misguided person who committed this murder did not intend to further the “pro-choice” movement, but unfortunately I think that will be the result of his actions.

You make a good point, Natalie. I’m sure the shooter was pro-life and now he’s spurred the pro-abortion crowd on and given them a martyr. Sigh. It’s just a dreadful mess all around. Dr. Tiller’s poor family is in mourning, babies are still being murdered in our country and the shooter will now get life in prison and HIS family suffers, too. AWFUL!
