Smart Girl Politics Applauds Tim Tebow for Upholding his First Amendment Rights
January 26, 2010 – Smart Girl Politics commends Florida Gators’ quarterback, Tim Tebow, on upholding his First Amendment rights in the face of massive criticism. Tebow’s Super Bowl advertisement, paid for by Focus on the Family, tells the story of Tebow’s mother’s decision to not end her pregnancy against the advice of doctors. Tebow credits his mother and her decision as “courageous.”
Smart Girl Politics, a grassroots Conservative women’s group, feels strongly that every American deserves the freedom of speech, regardless of their profession or their religious or political views. “Tim Tebow and his mother deserve a great deal of credit for telling their story in the face of such great criticism. Their ability to do so is proof that the First Amendment of our Constitution, which grants us free exercise of religion and freedom of speech, is alive and well” says Stacy Mott, Founder and President of Smart Girl Politics. “Differences in views should not limit this freedom. Smart Girl Politics supports Tebow in his decision to speak his mind, whether he is advocating abortion, gun control, or taxing our citizens.”
This advertisement has come under recent and repeated criticism by some women’s groups, saying that this advertisement is too divisive to show during the largest sporting event of the year. “Where are these same groups when a celebrity uses a nationally televised award’s show as a bully pulpit for their own political views? There should not be a political or religious litmus test on our freedom of speech,” says Rebecca Wales, Director of Communications for Smart Girl Politics. “Groups who have an issue with the Focus on the Family ad are welcome to purchase their own time during the Super Bowl to tell their own stories.”
Smart Girl Politics strongly encourages CBS to continue airing this advertisement, as planned.
