I recently reached out to SGP co-founder and Executive Director, Teri Christoph to get the inside story on how the group was started one year ago today. Happy Birthday Smart Girl Politics!

SGN: Stacy Mott is the founder of SGP, right? How and when did you get involved? Were you also a part of its “birth”?

TC: Stacy Mott is the founder of SGP. Smart Girl Politics began as her personal blog (smartgirlpolitics.blogspot.com) in the summer of 2008. I was also blogging (decidedlyright.wordpress.com) and was looking for other conservative blogs to add to my blogroll. Around Election Day 2008, Stacy posted a message on her blog that she wanted to get some conservative women together and start some sort of movement, as there weren’t many outlets on the Internet for us right-leaning ladies. I emailed Stacy, and thus began the new iteration of SGP.

With Stacy, and a few other ladies like Tabitha Hale, I started grabbing the SGP name on Twitter, Facebook and Ning. I started the Ning site on Nov. 10, 2008, so that’s why we’re celebrating today. Stacy and I worked closely together those first months to get a structure in place, thus I am co-founder.

SGN: Was there a defining moment that led you to SGP?

TC: The reason I got involved: the lack of outlets and online communities for conservative women. There was a real need for something like SGP so that we right-leaning ladies realize there are a LOT of us out there.

SGN: What kind of political work did you do in your “previous” life?

TC: In my previous life, I interned and briefly worked at the White House during Bush 41’s administration. After that, I volunteered on a local Congressional race, where I met my husband. I have been a stay-at-home mom for a decade, but the 2008 election (especially Sarah Palin’s presence on the GOP ticket) got the fires reignited!

SGN: Where do you see SGP going in the future?

TC: In the future, I would like to see SGP continue to educate our members on grassroots activism and the political process. I’d like us to continue to be a presence in grassroots movement, especially with our nationwide voter registration drives. Most importantly, I’d love to see our members take what they’ve learned and run for office! We are under-represented in our government and that needs to change!
